April 11 is #NationalPetDay and it's no surprise that we here at Pawsome Doggie can't let this National Pet Day holiday go by without giving it a nod. We love our pets, and we know we're not alone either.
According to the ASCPA, "It's estimated that 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats are owned in the United States. Approximately 37-47% of all households in the United States have a dog, and 30-37% have a cat."
Based on our own research here's something else we know--30 to 50% of pet parents celebrate their dog's birthday, in one way or another. Even celebrities are a part of this statistic.
In fact, I recently wrote a piece for Parade.com on celebrities who celebrate their dog's birthdays. Here's what I found out--these 11 celebrities and famous faces that are dog lovers take celebrating their dog’s birthday quite seriously.
Chrissy Teigen and John Legend Just last month Teigen made the news for wishing her dog Puddy a happy birthday via an Instagram post. That post got 243,000 likes. Teigen and husband John Legend have three dogs and a baby on the way—a human baby, that is—and admit that they are the kind of people who do celebrate their dogs’ birthdays.
Barack, Michelle, Sasha and Malia Obama It seems that each year the POTUS 44 and family throws a birthday party for each of the First Dogs—Bo and Cappy. One year People Pets covered the party, especially since the First Daughters invited their friends—with dogs in tow—to celebrate their dog’s birthday.
Jason Biggs When the American Pie and Orange is the New Black‘s dog Teet turned 13, Biggs and his wife held a very special 13th birthday party for the pup—a Bark Mitzvah. The celebration was held in a California temple and included traditional Jewish bread called challah. Mazel Tov, Teet!
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth The off again, on again couple celebrated Hemsworth’s puppy’s first birthday a few years ago. The English bulldog’s name is Ziggy.
Actress Ashley Benson When the Pretty Little Liars dog Walter turned one year old, Ashley Benson threw him a small party with a small cake—he’s a small dog, after all—and chronicled the celebration on Instagram.
Actor/Singer Ray J Last year BarkPost reported that actor/singer Ray J (aka Brandy’s brother) spent $30,000 to celebrate his Maltese’s birthday. (I didn’t even spend close to that for my wedding!)
I’m sure there are other celebrities who celebrate their dog’s birthday, and I’d love to hear about them, if you happen to know!
